As some of you know, Martog was said to have cancer after his weird episode at the beginning of December. They gave him 2 months to live. We took him home and gave him pain and anti-inflammatory meds for months. Recently, the meds have not been working very well…his hind legs just collapse at times. Also, he was going #2 in the house since January, but started in June #1. All this is not a good combination. We can tell he’s in pain, but his determination for food and pettings…believe that would drive him on and on.
Pete has been wrestling with when he would have to put Martog to sleep. Well, he started getting sores on his hind paws a few weeks ago, but this week Pete noticed there are sores on his legs and his unmentionables. The time had come. It’s never an easy decision. Pete made the call and set it up for this morning.
Last night and this morning I took a lot of pictures of him…and all Pete’s siblings and father came by to say “bye” to Martog past couple days (not that all of them knew it was happening today). Martog was given cooked pork as a treat repeatedly last night and this morning. I said, “bye” to Martog, but I just could not go with Pete. Wes went with him. I cried as they left…it’s really just so weird. It’s so humane, but also so weird to have this decision. And, of course, SAD. It’s so fresh, I can’t even…I can imagine it’s going to be weird without him wondering around…breathing heavy…drooling on our feet, squeezing his way past us…wanting food…stealing Parker’s food. I wonder if Maja & Parker will miss him or notice? Guess we shall see over the next week.

He was a great companion to Pete. And what a ham at parties! See my previous post on “Introducing Martog” for more information about his life.
Martog will be missed…may he have the biggest meatiest bone in doggie heaven….and strong legs to mark his territory where he likes. Rest in peace Martog.
