My Great Grandmother

Today, June 1st, would have been my great-grandmother Pauline’s 98th birthday. Sadly, she lost her fight with blood cancer at the age of 89. I am very grateful to say that I had so many years to know her, I was 24 when she passed away. I know she is always in my heart and I will always love and miss her. Anyway, I did not intend this post to be about her death…but about my memories of her.

Young Great-Grandmother! (1930s)

For as long as I can remember, my great-grandmother was always a warm, friendly person. I always looked forward to visiting her (and my great-grandfather when he was alive – he passed away when I was 11, I think) in Vermont and her visiting us in Florida later. Her (their) house is something I will always remember, even though now another family owns it. Oh, I remember the wallpaper and all the pictures everywhere.

When we’d visit them, when I was a kid, I remember my great-grandmother always made us breakfast. Bacon and eggs fried in that bacon fat….and toast. A nice hearty breakfast. To this day, I absolutely LOVE eggs fried in the bacon fat. My great-grandmother always made sure to wear the bracelet or other jewelry she had that had her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s pictures on it. I know she was a sentimental woman that kept everything (as I was told so later to confirm this). She loved to share information about our family (now I wish I’d listened or asked more, but that’s how we are when we are younger). She was a wealth of information, my grandmother (her daughter), says she doesn’t know/remember all that her mother did.

My great-grandmother never forgot a birthday or a holiday. She was always sure to send a card and a gift. I am still so angry and sad that on her birthday in 2006 my apartment was broken into and a necklace that I got of hers was stolen (along with all my gold jewelry and my camera – whoever broke in knew what they wanted). The few things I still managed to keep from her are very treasured. Since, she was not of the “computer” age, she always wrote such lovely notes…and she wrote me fairly often (in addition to birthdays and holidays).

I remember that she was strong-willed and was determined to drive until she couldn’t. I remember her taking me around places in Vermont…and whenever we went out to eat, we always had to have ice cream. She once told me…”ice cream fit in between the cracks.” Hehe. Also, she loved to mow her huge yard on her riding lawn mower. When I smell fresh cut grass, it almost always brings a smile to my face. And she lived alone in her house until just about the very end…

Her and my great-grandfather always seemed like such a wonderful couple, they were married for over 50 years (before he passed away). They had three children – my grandmother, and my two great uncles.

Hilton Grand Vacations Presentation Review

Last October when we stayed at Hilton for one night, we got lured into this 3 night Hilton Grand Vacations hotel stay. The sales lady sold it well, made it sound low-pressure. Just go stay at a nice Hilton Grand Vacation Resort and see a presentation about ownership. It was a great deal, and we were excited to come back and see friends, so we signed up. Earlier this year we still had not booked the trip (if you do not book w/in 45 days you get charged another $50), so my boyfriend said let’s go for your birthday. I planned it and booked it.

Then began both of us worrying a bit about it and planning for the worst. The stipulations to go are that you as a couple make $70,000 or more and of course that you go to the presentation. Also, all staying must go, okay, just two of us.

Morning of, we woke up late, but still managed to get ready and over there on time. We went to Parc Soleil, they currently only have two building built, but they have plans for at least two more. They had us go upstairs to eat a light lunch. Well, the choices were hotdogs, donuts, yogurt…and drinks. Blah. I went with a donut, since we had not eaten yet, as I’m not a fan of hotdogs. They had us wait there for a while, and then brought us to another area to wait for our HGV presentation.

We met Adrienn Konczos, and she was very professional, friendly, understanding, and very good at her job. She was not forceful, she did not make us feel bad, she really sells HGV very well. It was a pleasant experience. We learned about the process, that you buy points for the level of vacationing that you plan on (later you can buy more if you want) – ex. if you want to vacation 10 days a year in a one bedroom HGV, then you buy points for that. Then you pay off your ownership over 10 years or so (you can finance with them or get outside financing). It is flexible, you can stay at any HGV with your points, or sister sites all over the world. It’s really a great option if you like vacationing or need a push to vacation, since you now own it!

I have to say, we went in thinking they’d be pushy and bring pushier and pushier people out, but they weren’t and they didn’t. Also, we thought it wasn’t affordable or worth it, but it is affordable and it is worth it. I mean, a guaranteed vacation every other year or every year of your life? Hello, now that’s awesome! Yes, you OWN your vacation for the rest of your life and pass on to your children (so you treat it like real estate on your taxes). And, if you want you can rent out your rooms at the HGV specified rate (how cool is that..you can make some $ and save your friends $ if you can’t go). Really this is a no brainer! Once you pay it off (and if you can pay cash, most worth it because no financing and interest payments), then all you pay are the maintenance fees. You are locked in forever for your room and stay level…so you will always get that…even as hotel costs go up. Seriously, it is something we never thought we’d want to say yes to, but it is.

Unfortunately for us, a life changing event happened since we purchased our package, I lost my job (and still job hunting – so if anyone needs an Instructional Designer…hehe). Luckily, HGV is so awesome that they said since this happened since we booked, we could come back and get the incentives and the awesome deal of joining during a presentation. As, that was what we were most bummed about…seeing that it was affordable and so flexible…but that we just could not budget this into our life at this point. We fully intend, if we plan to go ahead with it, that we will contact Adrienn Konczos – as she was awesome and would deserve our commission (as I do imagine they get that since they are actually selling real estate to you). I also, HIGHLY recommend her, if you feel this is for you.

My boyfriend and I ate the box of Honey Bunches of Oats Honey Roasted this last week and it was very good. I liked the cinnamon flavor and all the different grains in it. It does have a slight “corn flakes” taste, though, but I like that. I did enjoy the box and I will definitely try some of the other flavors like With Almonds, Vanilla Bunches, and Fruit Blends…really looking forward to trying them! My Epcot’s Flower & Garden Festival Day (5/20/12)

The intention had been to get up and get to Epcot as early as we could, well as early as we could was 11:30am (it opens at 9am). Partying it up 3 nights in a row got to us, we just do not do that anymore…hah.

We wondered around and I took some pictures, while we waited for my long-time friend, Oriana, to join us. She arrived at the park around 1pm, I think. We were all hungry and ate in the Land at Sunshine Seasons, which had vegan friendly food for Oriana. We picked up fast passes to Soarin’ (which were for 8:50-9:50pm – later we found out that since Test Track is closed for a long while, they are keeping the Land open an hour later so people can ride the rides there – now that’s a nice thing Disney!).

Off we went walking around seeing everything, taking pictures, and talking! Oh, right and drinking! It was quite hot, why did we drink? Why not?! We had tequila flights in Mexico at La Cava del Tequila and tried Sake in Japan (in the way back).

We did ride a few rides – Living with the Land (a Pete’s must ride), Maelstrom, Gran Fiesta, Spaceship Earth, Mission: Space, and Soarin’ (most awesome in the TOP row so you do not see feet dangling). We did, however miss, Illuminations, due to being in line and on Soarin’ during that time.

Pete and I did have an ADR for Via Napoli, and Oriana went to find Vegan Sushi in Japan at Tokoyo Dining…both were successful. Via Napoli’s appetizer and surprise birthday dessert were delicious, their pizza left me wanting. Pete however, enjoyed his seafood dish. So, would we eat there again? Probably…but I might go with something other than pizza. Oriana loved her Vegan Sushi!

Although it was hot, and we kept trying to find shade and A/C, we did a lot, took some good pics, laughed and enjoyed the day! I am so glad Oriana was able to come over from Tampa and spend the day with us! She even got to rent a cherry red Mustang because of the issues they had that morning when she was booking…and that’s the car her and her husband want…now that’s SWEET!

Emeril’s & CityWalk (5/19/12)

On Saturday in Orlando, we were to celebrate my birthday (was the 14th) at Emeril’s and Universal’s CityWalk and my bestie (Lu) since 7th grade came up from Ft. Myers to join in the fun! The hotel even put her in the same bldg on the same floor!

Since we found out last minute that it was free for FL residents to park after 6pm at Universal, we waited to arrive after that. Universal DOES NOT advertise this, only says $5 after 6pm, so FL Res keep this in mind for future attendance there. Sorry to those I did not inform, but I was a lot busy that night and only found out that night, trust me I would have put it on the evite had I known.

Twelve of us dined and drank at Emeril’s and got a table in the middle of the room. It was a really nice time seeing everyone – JM, NS, SK, EK, MD, PR, FF, FR, MR, and of course, Lu! Pete and I each got two appetizers as our meals. Those that did get an actual dinner course were provided with a sumptuously sized meal. I would definitely eat at Emeril’s again and I do appreciate a menu that is varied for all budgets. Oh, I do have to rave about the Wild Mushroom with Truffles flatbread I had for dinner (3 of us had it)…it was absolutely amazing – amazing – best flatbread EVER.

We ended up going to three clubs – Red Coconut, Latin Quarter, and The Groove. The music was pretty good in all three at some points…and of course not so good at other points. Tijuana Flats & Cerviche (5/18/12)

Last Friday we had a couple of plans set up. Early in the day we met up with JM and DS to eat at Tijuana Flats. It was great to see them, and the food was good, of course. We were chatting it up and I never got pics!

We checked into our hotel and got ready for dinner at Cerviche. We were meeting up at Cerviche for our friend, GC’s, 30th birthday. Half of us got there late, so we ended up eating later…but it all was fun and the food tasty.

Pete and I shared two dishes, because GC’s husband, EP, got the awesome PATATAS BRAVAS for the table. Pete and I had a delicious beef dish, SOLOMILLO A LA PARILLA, and a…well, I didn’t care for it..duck dish (PATO A LA PARILLA). I also got a tasty peach drink, and then Glenda shared her sparkling sangria with me (we all thought it tasted weird, but still drank it).

After, we were on our way back to the car to put our food in before checking out other places…when we got begged to go into Bliss. LOL. Okay, GC went up and asked the price, then came back to us (EP, Pete, and I) and we discussed. They held our food and stuff all special. I do think..it was because GC was all “cuted” up!

Pete and I have wanted to try Bliss before, but always passed because its $10 for guys to go in…so it was nice to try for free. They play music that we like…the lighting was cool. The place is a bit small, and filled up quick (while I had my back turned). I did not like the bathroom placement, but if I was on the dancefloor, I probably would. I’d go back…yep…I would.

It was a nice night and nice to see EP and GC, as it had been a year or more since we saw them. We all called it a night around 1am…and we headed back to our hotel.

Ignition @Firestone in Orlando (5/17/12)

Last Thursday, we headed down to Orlando to spend the weekend with friends. A nice 7 hour drive…and first we met up with S&K (as we were staying the night at their house) and went out to dinner a nice Greek restaurant in Oviedo. Good food, good friends, good time.

Then we got ready to go downtown with another friend, Fabian. He goes regularly to Ignition at Club Firestone and hoops. We met him at his house, then the three of us went downtown. It’s a big club, with techno, on Ignition nights, in every room (4). The music was awesome…it was so nice to hear good music in a club, as we don’t get that here in Columbia.

We wondered around, seeing all the rooms…had a few drinks…danced a little.There were hoopers (of which Fabian is one), and pyrotechnic dancers. I was told by a guy…that I was the best dancer he’d ever seen in that room. EVER. And he was bleeding his heart out. I am not sure I was dancing, as I was reaching for my camera to take a picture of my cup, but thank you. LOL. And, at one point, Pete was told he was a better “Peacocker” than the guy was (turned out to be one of the DJs). Well, didn’t we get amazing compliments this night?

We had to leave early, as Fabian had work the next day, and well, I was tired. Pete could have kept going…hehe, but he was tired, too. All in all, we’d go back, and if you love techno and live in Orlando, check this place out – every Thursday at Firestone. For Pete, this night was AMAZING, as he loves, loves, loves Techno. He’d love to be a DJ or run his own techno club…maybe one day.

Harsh Realities

In no particular order, the harsh realities I’m up against currently.

1. Exercise alone no longer means I’ll lose weight. It seems since I’m older now, that I must change my diet along with exercise. Even though I went from couch potato to 5-7 days of exercise a week, yep, I’ve maintained my weight, not lost any. It’s a hard reality to realize. I am jealous that my boyfriend can lose weight, but I just maintain. I have a goal to lose 15 lbs, of course toning up is most important and fitting back into my size(s) down clothes. 2. Not being overweight, does not mean you can’t have water weight gain in your ankles. I’ve been fighting this for the past year. I am JUST barely in my weight/height range, but if I don’t exercise a day, my ankles get fat…water weight gain, I guess. Both of them…and it sucks and makes me want to cover my ankles (made me wear pants instead of a dress this past Saturday night). I haven’t told anyone, except Pete until recently. It seems, I need to cut salt out (I’m not much of an add more salt person) of my diet…even more…elevate my feet those days….possibly get support hose/socks…and exercise (which exercising was helping, but last week due to vacation, I only exercised two days and that wasn’t enough – has to be cardio, I think). So, yep, another harsh reality of life. If I can’t get it under control, I will eventually see a doctor about it, preferably when I get a job, though. I am jealous of skinny ankles now…lol.

Trust me, these ankles should have definition.

3. Too qualified and not qualified enough happens a lot. I’m in this boat. I’m trying to get a job, applying to everything I think I can do…but its tough. I don’t know what it is, but I think its both…that sometimes I’m too qualified and they think I’ll leave and sometimes I’m not qualified for the position, so they won’t give me a chance. It’s a harsh reality when one has 9 years of experience in their field (Instructional Design/Instructional Systems). The area I am in, not a lot of those jobs, so I’m trying for other jobs, too. Like Education Associate, Administrative Assistants, other state jobs, etc.

4. I might have to move away from my boyfriend for a job. Well, those are the pressing things on my mind and harsh life realities. Luckily, I do have control to a point, it’s just a matter of taking it and deciding what direction to go with things. Any advice?

There is a job I’d love to have working at Walt Disney World in Orlando…they have an Instructional Design Manager position that I’m pretty sure I could do…and would so move back to Orlando for that. Plus, I miss my friends there and the stuff to do! Anyone got pull at WDW? Doesn’t hurt to ask does it?
